Caracas Trio
We compose, arrange, and perform original music rooted in Venezuelan traditions and shaped by New York City’s modern jazz scene.
Caracas Trio is made up of three musicians who grew up in the same neighborhood in Caracas, Venezuela. After moving to New York City, they each found their way into the jazz scene — as instrumentalists, composers, and drummers. Their music draws from Afro-Venezuelan traditions and is shaped by the energy, improvisation, and community of NYC’s modern jazz world. All three sing, play percussion, and contribute original compositions to the group’s sound.
The trio features Juan Diego Villalobos on vibraphone, Gabriel Chakarji on piano, and Daniel Prim on drums.
LET ME SMOKE
new release
Our second single is a collaborative project with producer Orestes Gomez. It is built on Afro-Venezuelan chimbangueles drums reimagined with electronic textures, and includes sampled melodies from Afro Venezuelan traditions.
It features spoken word by Janelle McDermoth, reciting her poem “Let Me Smoke” about migration, justice, and unity.
